Last days of Sanath
20 February 2008
Why do I get the feeling that Sanath will retire from the one day form of the game as well in 2008? He has failed to get to double figure too often recently. Fair enough that most of his recent games have been in Aus against Aus and they know how to cramp him up but that is no excuse. These days it just doesn’t seem like he has enough juice in him to field for 50 overs and then bat. And by juice I’m not refering to his fitness level alone, also his enthusiasum and motivation also seem to suffer. He has also just been dropped from the one day tour of the West Indies which is not a good sign.
Even if he does not fire the mere fact that he is in the line up does give the rest of the team a boost and psycological advantage. Who else is there to take his place? There is no obvious choice in my opinion. There are no players who have been groomed to take his place. Tharanga is not a one day opener, That blitz in Eng was a combination of luck on his part and poor form from Eng. Dhilshan has already been promoted and Chamara Silva isn’t consistent enough. Mahela and the selectors have a serious issue, I’m sure they are more than aware of. The question is what can they do about it?!
